He converted to Islam after the Battle of Badr.〔Arthur Jeffery: Art. ''Abu'l-Dardā'', in: Encyclopaedia of Islam, vol. 1. Leiden: E. J. Brill, 2nd edition 1986, p. 113〕 He was declared the brother of Salman the Persian and served as a Governor in Syria during the caliph Uthman's reign.
